Biggest Loser Diet Will Kick Your Ass

So we see the contestants on NBC's The Biggest Loser dropping pounds like crazy. The LA Times reports that with a diet as drastic as that employed by the show's contestants, the dramatic weight loss would be expected.

The diet used by the contestants "stresses generous amounts of low-fat protein and high-fiber vegetables and fruits; the exercise plan focuses on fat-burning cardio and circuit training." Check out the article for the details about the diet, but know that they are restricted to a measly 1,400 calories a day (for those that weigh 200 pounds)!

A UCLA nutritionist weighs in (har har) on the diet:

"It's not unlike the diet we recommend here at UCLA," says Susan Bowerman, of the Center for Human Nutrition at the University of California, Los Angeles. "But the calorie recommendations are somewhat low. I would be concerned for someone on an unsupervised diet (of so few calories). It's hard to get your nutritional needs met on calories that low."
