Taylor Hicks Tries to Make Nice

If you have to explain to the press that you didn't really mean to say what you said, odds are you are already in trouble. Such is the case with American Idol winner Taylor Hicks. E! Online reports that in October, Hicks said "that he had never watched Idol before appearing on the show and that, for him, the Fox megahit 'is fizzling out.'"

Hicks tried to explain that he was not ungrateful to the show that gave him his big break into stardom and Ford commercials: "I'm giving up my crown soon. That's what I meant. I'm just now learning about how the media can turn things around. I'm very grateful to that show and we're like one big family. It was taken completely out of context. I will be watching next season on my tour bus."

Keep an eye out for the new season of American Idol, which begins on January 16th on Fox.

It does look like Taylor's words were taken out of context to an extent. You have to look at the questions he was asked--he was asked about how his audiences are different now, and he said that for him, Idol is fizzling out, and you can buy his album or not--meaning that he won't be able to ride the Idol coattails for the rest of his musical career and he knows that people will judge him based on his music, not by his association with the show.

It's a shame that some programs, like MSNBC's Scarborough Country, actually transposed the quotes in the article to make it look like Taylor made the "fizzling out" comments and THEN said "and I don't watch it, either"...when in fact the "I don't watch it" was in response to the interviewer stating that HE didn't watch it. It's also pretty common knowledge that Taylor never did watch AI; his brother was the fan and the one that encouraged Taylor to try out.
